Mac OS X shows ‘volume/file read error' after improper system shutdown
Unexpected system crash or power failure, system freezing are some of the most common causes that force users to shutdown system improperly. The followed attempts to reboot the Mac system require one to hold power button for the OS the boot. Some of the cases in which system is turned off due to unexpected crash or if it goes non responding, the system may not be able to boot properly. The system refuses to do so & may also generate error messages associating to missing or corrupt system files. This prevents user from getting onto ones system & have access to drive data. Such a situation would lead to data inaccessibility & recovery is required in all such cases, if data backup is not made.
In a scenario like this, when Mac system is turned off improperly, it is quite obvious to face one of the following problems at next reboot –
Blue or Gray screen is shown when trying to reboot and this remains to be the case irrespective of the attempts made for the same. In this case, with the help boot disc disk utility could be used. However, this may not end successfully as - File read error or volume read error message is shown when tried to verify or repair damaged Mac OS X volume.
This is the time boot camp helps in booting the system by selecting Windows operating system; however this is not the case always which makes it essential to have proper & effective means to troubleshoot issues arising due to improper system shutdown such as the file read error.
As a result of problem in system boot up, the system may experience more severe issues like that of –
- Critical File & volume directory could get damaged, if opened at that time
- OS file are damaged, resulting into unbootable system
- Damaged or corrupt hard drive volume or file system & components
These would not allow the system to boot resulting into serious issues; particularly data access from the drive is lost. To correct file system inconsistency encountered, OS reinstall is required post which data could be restored from backup. However, if no backup is available one is required to make use of mac disk recovery application in order to rescue lost files.
