Fix Mac Error '-123 not an HFS volume'!
HFS which stands for ‘Hierarchical File System’ is actually a file system which is launched by Apple Inc. specially to work with its newly developed 20MB hard disk of Macintosh operating system. This new file system has replaced the old Macintosh File System (MFS) which is the original file system of Mac computers. Though HFS file system has got several advanced features in terms of performance, data accessibility and others, at times while accessing volumes based on HFS file system, the volume cannot be recognized by the operating system and hence the volume becomes inaccessible. In such circumstances in order to recover back the lost and inaccessible data you need to use Macintosh File Recovery software.
Let’s consider a situation where while accessing data from Mac OS X based volume, you will come across error message below mentioned error message –
"-123 wrgVolTypErr Not an HFS volume [wrong volume type error or (obsolete) operation not supported for MFS]"
The error message clearly indicates that the issue is related to the file system of Mac system which is responsible for storing and managing data stored in the hard drive of Mac computers. So, any damage or corruption to the structure of the file system can cause inaccessibility of the data as it happened in the above mentioned situation.
The corruption of the file system can be cause due to any of the above mentioned reasons ranging from unexpected shutdown due to virus attack, application malfunctioning, operating system crash and so on. In order to get rid of this possible file system corruption, user can use Mac’s inbuilt utility i.e. ‘Disk Utility’. In case the this inbuilt tool fails to fix the issue then you can try ‘FSCK’ command which appropriate switches to check the file system at start-up and repair the damages. But in case neither of the methods worked then restore the available valid backup. Doing so will restore all your lost and inaccessible data. But in case the backup is corrupt or has gone damaged then to get back the lost and inaccessible data the only way is to use third party Macintosh File Recovery software which will scan the entire Mac volume and recover all the data in a safe and secure place, so that it can be used later.
